TAUTAY-LAK

Kazakhstan, the Middle Ages, the Great Steppe. In a snowstorm, a lone wanderer, an elderly dervish in ragged clothes, asks for the night in the house of the bai, to wait out the storm. Bai invites him to the house and feeds meat, in return asking the dervish to calm his crying little son, tell him a bedtime story, the myth of the Great Steppe. Dervish agrees. He sits near the cradle of the boy, also inviting the bai and his wife to listen to the story of a horseman who broke his father’s covenants and thereby condemned himself to suffering
