Yesterday, on February 20, the 70th Berlin Film Festival started in the capital of Germany, where the frame of State Center for Support of National Cinema, Kazakh Cinema, will be presented for the first time.

In particular, this year the festival will be held for the first time without the participation of Dieter Kosslik, who has held a position of Director General at Berlinale for the last 18 years. He was replaced by Marietta Rissenbeck, who became the first female director for the 70-year long history of this set. The artistic administrator of the festival was Carlo Shatrian, who previously held a position of Director General of Film Festival in Locarno.

Unfortunately, this year Kazakh’s films were not presented in any of the official programs of the festival. However, four of our compatriots will represent Kazakhstan in different educational sections for young filmmakers. Thus, film producer, Yulia Kim, and composer, Akmaral Zykayeva (Mergen), will take part in Berlinale Talents program, film director, Olga Korotko, has been selected in the Script station section, and casting director, Nadin Tsoy, has joined the largest relevant organization - International Association of Casting Directors.

It is particularly remarkable that “Farsy Lessons” was presented this year in the main competitive program,  the director of which, Vadim Perelman, was among the finalists of the second pitching of the Kazakh State Center for National Cinema Support in section “International co-products” (you may see the full list of finalists here) with the project “Star Shadow.”

It is worth reminding that in 2013 the film “Harmony Lessons” directed by Kazakh film director, Emir Baygazin, was presented in the main competition of Berlin Film Festival and received “Silver Bear” for outstanding artistic achievements (the laureate became film photography director, Aziz Zhambakiyev).

For reference:

Berlinale Talents (Berlinale Talent Campus previously) is a network platform for 250 outstanding young professionals in the cinema sector and dramaturgy. The participants of the platform are selected by International Committee. One of the main requirements for professionals is the experience in the cinema sector not exceeding ten years.

During the festival, the participants have the opportunity to meet with leading experts and well-known film directors with whom they may discuss innovations and business trends, develop their own projects in project laboratories, and present them to the festival audience.

In total, nearly three thousand professionals from 130 countries of the world take part in the platform.

Script station is a laboratory at Berlinale Talents, where young filmmakers work closely with well-known field-specific consultants to correct their scripts, as well as to intensify the story and characters. With the assistance of their advisers, the participants have the opportunity to present their projects to the other participants.
